The renovations don't have the commission's approval just yet. Commission members say they support the project, but asked Haviland to come back next month with more details.

The work would include putting in new windows, installing a two-car garage, and putting in a rooftop deck on the building, which was constructed between 1910 and 1920. Haviland told the commission that she'd found the building's original doors and hopes to salvage them.

"We'd love to use them," she said. "That's our hope, to refurbish them and use them in our residence."

According to the Express-Times, Haviland and her husband -- who are from Phillipsburg -- would rent the lower floor to a business. They hope to move in by the end of the year.
