Roommate 'Picked Open' Safe, Stole Cash and Gun, Police Say

Daniel Matlock Jr. accused of robbing friend to pay off drug debt.

An Easton man who was shot in Wilson earlier this year is now accused of stealing a gun and cash to pay a drug debt.

Daniel Matlock Jr., 28, is charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

According to court records, the case began in February, when Brandon Groff, of the 700 block of Wolf Avenue, reported being robbed.

Police say Matlock had been staying with Groff and had stolen $600 in cash, and as well as a handgun worth $600. Matlock had allegedly "picked open" Groff's safe with an eyeglass screwdriver.

Groff told police that Matlock admitted to him that he had stolen the cash and the gun to pay a drug debt to a dealer named "E."

A warrant was issued for Matlock's arrest in February. He was arraigned Wednesday after being extradited from prison in New Jersey. Matlock was sent to Northampton County Prison after being unable to post $25,000 bail.

Matlock had been shot and robbed in January by a group of men in Wilson.
