2012 Easton Homicide Rate Was Highest in a Decade

Easton has more murders last year than any year since 2007. Mayor tells newspaper improving neighborhoods will make city safer.

Back in November, after Easton saw its fourth killing of the year, we noted that the city's homicide rate was the worst since 2007. That was the year Easton had five murders. What we didn't note was that Easton quickly tied that record a few weeks later, with the death of Paul Murray, the fifth and final homicide of 2012. In an interview with the Morning Call last week, Mayor Sal Panto put the blame on easy access to guns and a culture of violence, but also said the city needs to change its demographics to lower violence. "Better homes attract better people," Panto said. "We want the neighborhoods to come back. We want owner-occupied neighborhoods." We want to know what you think. Tell us in the comments what you think Easton needs to do …

Amend, It's hard to not cross over to other related areas of discussion when talking about gun control. (You once said something similar to me regarding another conversation) The bottom line on Easton is this; Criminals will get guns if they want guns, in Easton or wherever. If the criminals are shooting each other with illegal guns it has little affect on law abiding citizens. Unless, new laws …   more ›

Hearing Delayed in Jeter Easton Homicide

Easton man accused of fatal shooting over summer appears in court Friday for preliminary hearing, but gets continuance for not having public defender.

Naheem Adams, accused in the fatal shooting of an Easton man last summer, doesn't seem to be in a rush for a speedy trial. Appearing before District Judge Richard Yetter Friday afternoon, the man accused of killing George Jeter in July received a continuance of his preliminary hearing. A new date has been set for 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 before Yetter. Yetter wondered why Adams had yet to file an application for a public defender twice. Adams told the judge he was awaiting a decision by his family. The judge also wondered why Adams didn't sign a document for his right to a trial in 365 days when he appeared in county court on Dec. 4. "I'm not signing anything," said Adams, who wore an orange Northampton County Prison jumpsuit. City police had …

Easton Homicide Rate Highest Since 2007

2012 has been a violent year for Easton.

Matthew Kelly. William Thompson. George Jeter. Ervin Holton. These are the names of four men who died violent deaths in Easton in 2012, the deadliest year to hit the city in the last five. The city saw five homicides in 2007, including the notorious triple murder on 13th Street on Nov. 29. Since then, the murder rate in Easton has fluctuated, with two violent deaths in 2008 and one in 2009.  2010 was worse, with three homicides: And then last year saw a single homicide, the unsolved killing of George Humbert.  So far this year, city police have idenitifed suspects in two of the four homicides: Lawrence Gaines for William Thompson's stabbing, and Naheem Adams for shooting George Jeter.  Anyone with information on Holton's death is asked to …

The critical link in many of the violent acts in the city is the drug trade. It's the reason the prison is constantly near capacity. The violence around drugs won't end until we, as a society, reassess our attitudes and approach to the war on drugs. As it stands now, all Easton can hope to do is to gentrify the core element perpetrating these acts out of it's municipal boundaries.   more ›
