How Hurricane Sandy Effected Local Election

Voters from out state, here to restore power, or without it in NJ, came to PA seeking provisional ballots.

How Hurricane Sandy Affected Local Election

Workers from Michigan, and Dauphin/Bedford counties request provisional ballots in Northampton County.

Although power was back on in much of Northampton County Tuesday, Hurricane Sandy still managed to affect Election Day. Poll workers found themselves dealing with out-of-state and out-of-county utility workers -- in the area helping restore electricity -- who wanted to get provisional ballots so they could cast their votes. "We had guys from Michigan going from polling place to polling place, trying to get someone to let them vote," said Dee Rumsey, the county's registrar. But the county isn't able to give ballots to people who aren't registered here, Rumsey said. Election workers encountered a similar problem with voters from parts of New Jersey that still have no electricity who crossed the river with the -- mistaken -- impression that …

Northampton County GOP Sues for Voter Access

The chairman of Northampton County's Republicans says an Easton polling place is denying his party information.

Update, 6 p.m: County Registrar Dee Rumsey says she has instructed the judge of elections to release the names.  The Northampton County Republican Committee was headed to court Tuesday afternoon to get access to voting information from an Easton polling place. Robert Kerr, the party's local chairman, told Patch the move was prompted by a judge of elections in Easton's ninth ward refusing to allow party "strikers" to have access to voter information. Strikers are at polling places to tell whether or not registered voters from the party voted or not.  "This happens all the time at polls in real time," Kerr said, but added that wasn't the case today in Easton. "After five hours, they hadn't given them one name." Northampton County Election …

Reports of Voter Fraud, Voter ID Challenges, Irregularities Reported in Eastern PA

Election Day brought problems at polls in several areas of eastern Pennsylvania

EASTERN PA — Several reports of voting irregularities in Eastern Pennsylvania emerged on Tuesday, the day of the presidential election. In Easton, signs appeared offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to voter fraud convictions. A constable for Easton’s 10th ward removed one such sign staked into the ground after consulting with an elections attorney on site. The Pennsylvania Commercial Action Network, the same group that posted “Replace ObamaCare” billboards around the state, made the signs. ID Requests Many Easton voters also reported poll workers asking for their IDs, even though IDs are not required for this election cycle under the law. Matthew Keeler, press secretary for the PA Department of State, said that's part of the …

Sweden's workers pay the highest taxes in the world!!! That model wouldn't work here, since only 1/2 U.S. population pay ANY federal tax. Yes, the 47% who avoid federal tax demand much, but you can only squeeze the working class just so much to pay for it all.   more ›

Voter Fraud Signs at Polls Lead to Complaint

Advocacy group offers $1,000 reward for voter fraud tips. Critics call it a form of intimidation.

Follow our Lehigh Valley Live Election blog. EASTON - Signs offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to voter fraud convictions have popped up around Easton. At the South Side Senior Center, Mark Willis -- constable for the 10th ward -- thought they were inappropriate. After consulting with the elections attorney on site, Willis yanked it out of the ground. "It's something that might be intimidating or considered intimidating, to dissaude voters from coming in and placing their votes," Willis said. The signs -- which were also spotted at the Easton Area Neighborhood Center -- were made up by a group called Pennsylvania Commercial Action Network. PACAN, which describes itself as a non-profit and non-partisan business advocacy group…

When you move to a new residence and go to vote at a new polling place for the first time, you are REQUIRED to show proper ID before you can vote. It's a law that has been in place for decades. You simply over-reacted and tried to make a story out of nothing.   more ›

Updates on the 2012 federal and state elections will be posted here throughout the day. Connect with us on Twitter too at #PatchElections.

President Barack Obama was the clear winner in Easton Tuesday, according to results from Northampton County. But some things about Election Day weren't as simple in the city.  Numerous residents reported being asked for ID at their polling places, despite the fact that the state's voter ID law doesn't go into effect until next year. The county Republicans wound up going to court to get access to polling information. There were also complaints about signs posted by an advocacy group called PACAN offering a $1,000 reward for reports of voter fraud.  Did you have problems at the polls? Let us know in the comments, or e-mail me at tom.coombe@patch.com. Update, 10:10 p.m: The race has already been called for President Obama in Pennsylvania. In …

Pennsylvania Election Results 2012

The Keystone State helped Barack Obama win re-election in what was a good night for Democrats across Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania helped President Barack Obama win re-election as U.S. Sen. Bob Casey fended off a feisty challenge from Republican coal magnate Tom Smith in what turned out to be a big night for Democrats in the Keystone State. Democrats held the lead in three state row office races as of 2:30 a.m. Wednesday with close to 98 percent of the vote in, according to unofficial results. Kathleen Kane, a former assistant district attorney from Lackawanna County, made history by becoming the first Democrat and first woman to be elected as the state's attorney general. The Republican candidate, David Freed, is a two-term district attorney in Cumberland County. Democrat Eugene DePasquale of York leads Republican John Maher of Allegheny in the auditor …

Giuliani, Voight Stump for Romney in Bethlehem

The former New York mayor and Hollywood star fire up volunteers at Bethlehem GOP Victory Center. Romney surrogates say Pennsylvania is still in play.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani headed an all-star cast of Republican surrogates who came to the party’s Victory Center at the Westgate Mall in Bethlehem to make a last-minute pitch for Mitt Romney Monday night. Giuliani and his co-stars, actor Jon Voight, former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich and former U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, were there to thank and fire up volunteers and – to sell the idea that Pennsylvania is still in play in the presidential race.  “It will be quite a surprise and a kick in the you-know-what if Pennsylvania votes for Mitt Romney,” Guiliani said to a round of laughter and applause. Every major poll in the state – except for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review/Susquehanna Polling & Research poll, which scores the race a tie…

Thousands Brave Lines, Cold to Cheer Romney

With the election less than 48 hours away, Romney’s visit to Shady Brook Farm is one indication the campaign believes Pennsylvania is in play.

Thousands of supporters braved long lines and cold temperatures to attend Mitt Romney’s rally at Shady Brook Farm Sunday night.  With the election less than 48 hours away, Romney’s stop in Bucks County is one indication the campaign feels the Keystone State, with its 20 electoral votes, is in play. An estimated 25,000 people showed up to support the former Massachusetts governor, who told an enthusiastic crowd, “we’re taking back the White House because we’re going to win Pennsylvania.” The large crowd began forming hours before Romney arrived. Lines to get through security stretched from the farm to the Newtown Bypass for several hours leading up to the event.  Supporters, some holding signs and flags, bundled up to endure temperatures in…
