How Hurricane Sandy Affected Local Election
Workers from Michigan, and Dauphin/Bedford counties request provisional ballots in Northampton County.
Although power was back on in much of Northampton County Tuesday, Hurricane Sandy still managed to affect Election Day. Poll workers found themselves dealing with out-of-state and out-of-county utility workers -- in the area helping restore electricity -- who wanted to get provisional ballots so they could cast their votes. "We had guys from Michigan going from polling place to polling place, trying to get someone to let them vote," said Dee Rumsey, the county's registrar. But the county isn't able to give ballots to people who aren't registered here, Rumsey said. The chairman of Northampton County's Republicans says an Easton polling place is denying his party information.
Update, 6 p.m: County Registrar Dee Rumsey says she has instructed the judge of elections to release the names. The Northampton County Republican Committee was headed to court Tuesday afternoon to get access to voting information from an Easton polling place. Robert Kerr, the party's local chairman, told Patch the move was prompted by a judge of elections in Easton's ninth ward refusing to allow party "strikers" to have access to voter information. Strikers are at polling places to tell whether or not registered voters from the party voted or not. "This happens all the time at polls in real time," Kerr said, but added that wasn't the case today in Easton. "After five hours, they hadn't given them one name." Northampton County Election …

EASTERN PA — Several reports of voting irregularities in Eastern Pennsylvania emerged on Tuesday, the day of the presidential election. In Easton, signs appeared offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to voter fraud convictions. A constable for Easton’s 10th ward removed one such sign staked into the ground after consulting with an elections attorney on site. The Pennsylvania Commercial Action Network, the same group that posted “Replace ObamaCare” billboards around the state, made the signs. ID Requests Many Easton voters also reported poll workers asking for their IDs, even though IDs are not required for this election cycle under the law. At the South Side Senior Center, Mark Willis -- constable for the 10th ward -- thought they were inappropriate. After consulting with the elections attorney on site, Willis yanked it out of the ground. "It's something that might be intimidating or considered intimidating, to dissaude voters from coming in and placing their votes," Willis said. President Barack Obama was the clear winner in Easton Tuesday, according to results from Northampton County. But some things about Election Day weren't as simple in the city. Numerous residents reported being asked for ID at their polling places, despite the fact that the state's voter ID law doesn't go into effect until next year. The county Republicans wound up going to court to get access to polling information. Thousands of supporters braved long lines and cold temperatures to attend Mitt Romney’s rally at Shady Brook Farm Sunday night. With the election less than 48 hours away, Romney’s stop in Bucks County is one indication the campaign feels the Keystone State, with its 20 electoral votes, is in play.
