Bites Nearby: Colonial Pizza & Spaghetti House

Longtime fixture of downtown Easton is part pub, part family restaurant.

Easton has had quite a rich history since its founding in 1752. Many landmarks from the colonial era still exist today; some stand as monuments while others have changed functionality to accommodate modern times. Colonial Pizza & Spaghetti House is just such a place. Found on Spring Garden Street in the historic downtown, the red brick building has been standing since at least 1850, although the exact date is hard to pinpoint. Since then, it’s been a home, a grocery store, and a confectionery, before settling into its current occupation as a pizza restaurant in 1947. “We’ll be celebrating 65 years next year,” said general manager Tara Williams. “It’s a big anniversary.” Williams, an Easton resident, has worked at Colonial Pizza for six …

My late father, a well known Easton lawyer, represented the man who founded Colonial Pizza in the 1940s. I remember hearing that he introduced pizza to the Lehigh Valley. His name was, I believe, Joe Segreto. Regrettably pronounced "se-gretta" here. It's a wonderful Italian name, and as you can figure, means "secret". Joe had, I believe, a big secret. If you can guess, write me at chaunceyhowell@…   more ›

Bites Nearby: Rhyno Café & Gourmet Pizza

More than just a pizza place.

Rhyno Café & Gourmet Pizza might look like a pizza place. It might smell like a pizza place. It’s even housed in a former pizza place. But whatever you do, don’t just call it a pizza place. “We do so much more than just pizza,” said co-owner and chef Marcell Cleinow. “We want people to know that we’re different.” Rhyno Café opened just over one year ago on William Penn Highway, across the street from Walgreen’s near the intersection of William Penn and 25th Street. The restaurant celebrated its one-year anniversary on September 15. Cleinow has been a chef for more than 25 years, working in country clubs and restaurants in the Lehigh Valley area. He and co-owner Beverly Powell decided, a couple of years ago, that it was high time to open a …

Bites Nearby: BeanBath Café

New Bath restaurant/coffee house unveils an even newer menu.

The new BeanBath Café opened in the Southmoore Plaza on February 3 of this year, combining the allure of a metropolitan coffee house with an eclectic menu of salads, sandwiches, and breakfast platters. The restaurant, which is found on Route 512 just outside of Bath, is furnished with comfortable leather chairs and sofas over a polished hardwood floor. The artwork that decorates the walls and restrooms comes mostly from Indonesia and the Caribbean. “We pride ourselves on cleanliness, both in the kitchen and the dining room,” said owner Christopher Colvin. Colvin and his family own and operate the café; his wife, Lyn Colvin, is the restaurant’s sous-chef, and his eldest daughter Cezanne works the counter and behind-the-scenes operations.  …

Bites Nearby: State Cafe & Grill

Downtown Easton restaurant and bar celebrated one year in business.

State Café & Grill opened its doors on August 17, 2010, little more than one year ago, on South 5th Street in historic downtown Easton. Ask co-owner Juan Martinez how business has been, and he can’t help but smile. “We’re going strong into our second year,” said Martinez. “We have to thank the local community for all of their support.” The State Café & Grill, so named because of its proximity to the State Theatre, is a casual restaurant with a fine-dining flair. The dining room is outfitted with hardwood tables and a wrap-around bar that encloses an open-style kitchen, where guests can watch the preparation of their meals. State Café & Grill prides itself on its largely-American cuisine, a menu made up of a diverse array of gourmet burgers…

Bites Nearby: Emily's Ice Cream

Send off summer in style with a trip to a homemade ice cream shop.

In a few short weeks, we’ll be saying goodbye to summer, which means that we’ll have to come up with some other excuse to visit Emily’s Ice Cream in Nazareth, open not only daily but year-round. Emily’s Ice Cream, which is found just off of Route 191 in the same plaza as Three-Way Café, has been a local institution for nearly 20 years: while others are feeling the sting of competition and economy, Emily’s is doing just fine. “We have really loyal customers,” said manager Laura Romano. “I even get people from New Jersey who heard about us from a friend that said, ‘You have to try this ice cream!’” Emily’s regards itself as a specialty ice cream store, which makes sense because ice cream is all they do. All 32 flavors of hard ice cream are …

Bites Nearby: Jasmine Restaurant

New Asian-fusion restaurant in Forks Township features the best of Japanese and Thai cuisine.

You may have heard the old adage “Do one thing and do it well” before. Well, Jasmine Restaurant in Forks Township does two things, and if local feedback is any indicator, it’s doing them both well. Jasmine Restaurant, which opened this past April in the strip mall that also houses Big Woody’s sports bar, serves up both authentic Japanese cuisine and Thai specialties. According to owner Yong Lin, sushi is their most popular venture. Lin himself is a Manhattan-trained sushi chef of nearly ten years. “I started making sushi when I was seventeen years old,” Lin said proudly. The sushi bar in Jasmine Restaurant is open-style, facing the dining room, so that customers can watch the magic of a veteran sushi chef slice and dice fresh seafood …

Bites Nearby: Porter's Pub

The menu at this downtown Easton restaurant, styled after olde European pubs, may surprise you.

Imagine an old-world pub mixed with a contemporary bistro, and just for kicks, throw in a selection of more than 100 beers from around the world. Now you may have some idea of what Porter’s Pub is like. In 1988, three brothers bought a partially-dilapidated building in downtown Easton, at the corner of Northampton and Seventh streets, without the first thought of owning a restaurant. “We really loved the architecture in [Easton],” explained co-owner Larry Porter. “We bought the building and it came with a liquor license… by chance we got into the restaurant business.” The three brothers--Larry, Ken, and Jeff Porter--remodeled the entire building. The stone walls, the hardwood floors, the beautiful handcrafted mahogany bar and entranceway; …

I agree, never had anything but great food and service at Porter's. My dining companion at most of my meals there was great too! Sit outside on a nice day for "extra" entertainment.   more ›

Bites Nearby: Richard's Drive-In

Vintage style meets quality fast food in this week’s pick.

It may be a small menu at Richard’s Drive-In, but what it does, it does well, evident by its strong local following. Patrons know that Richard’s is the place to go for quick service and good food. Richard’s Drive-In is mostly about grilled and fried foods, like burgers, cheesesteaks, French fries and onion rings. Gyros and pierogies are about as exotic as it gets, but if it sounds like the fare is a bit mediocre, consider that a smaller menu means a more fastidious approach. “Everything that we use here is brand-name, [and] top-notch,” said owner Angelo Papageorgiou. “Our beef is grade-A, and all our produce stays local.” And despite the “top-notch” approach, no single item tops $6, with meal combos averaging $6 to $10.  Richard’s Drive-In…

Bites Nearby: Zanette's Nazareth Grill

A classic Nazareth establishment gets a new owner and some new improvements.

Zanette’s Nazareth Grill opened on May 23 of this year, although some customers still call it by the eatery’s original name from more than 15 years ago, the East Lawn Dairy Bar. Although it’s gone through a few name changes over the years, the heart is still the same; the new owner, Mike Zanette, kept the entire menu of the restaurant’s last incarnation, Choida’s Grill & Chill. But he’s made a few improvements that locals are eating up. “We have a new Asian salad… with crunchy noodles and Mandarin oranges,” said owner Mike Zanette. “It’s a big hit right now.” Also among the additions are fried Oreos, priced at two for $1.29. Zanette got the idea from carnivals and fairs, and according to him, they’re gaining popularity fast. Cheesesteaks …
