Photos: Polar Plunge Draws 600

About 600 people took the plunge into the Delaware River in Easton Saturday to help raise money for Northampton County Special Olympics.

  By noon Saturday, about 600 people had registered to participate in the first Polar Plunge of the Lehigh Valley, in Easton, in support of the Northampton County Special Olympics. Easton Mayor Sal Panto, returning from Washington D.C. to speak at the opening ceremony, announced that more than $80,000 had been raised. By 1 p.m., the plungers were poised to take the dip into the frigid Delaware River. They were set in groups of 75 to allow for a safer event. Paramedics stood by in case of emergencies. The water temperature was at an estimated 37 degees when the first participants dared their plunge. Brrr! Lehigh Valley Polar Plunge Today in Easton

Hundreds of people are expected to take a very cold dip in the Delaware River on Saturday as the first ever Lehigh Valley Polar Plunge comes to Easton

The first-ever Lehigh Valley Polar Plunge is planned for Saturday at Scott Park along the Delaware River in Easton. The event will benefit Special Olympics and is expected to draw hundreds of participants. Cost to participate is $50. 2013 Plunge Schedule Parking: All parking will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that Larry Holmes Drive in front of Scott Park will be closed to allow for easy walking and access to the plunge area. There are numerous metered parking spots and lots available within a short walk of Scott Park. Shoes: All plungers must wear shoes into the water. Bare feet are not allowed for safety reasons.
