Peace Candle Brings Huge Crowd to Easton

Annual Peace Candle celebration includes tuba players, ice sculptures and Easton's 100-year-old historian.

Hundreds of people filled Easton's Centre Square Friday night for the annual Peace Candle lighting. The actual lighting is just a small part of the event, which also included a mummers band, ice sculptors, a petting zoo, horse-drawn carriage rides and the Easton debut of TubaChristmas. (The name only tells part of the story, as the group plays Christmas tunes on a variety of brass instruments, including the tuba.) This year, the candle was lit by Easton resident Cindy Lytle, whose boyfriend, Tom Sestak, won the Easton Holiday Committee's Imperial Illuminator Auction.  Sestak won an auction to light the candle, but then turned over the honors to Lytle "because he's a gentleman," said Sandy O'Brien Werner of the city's holiday committee. Who Wants to Light the Peace Candle?

Annual auction gives residents a chance to bid for the right to flip the switch on the Peace Candle.

Want to light Easton's Peace Candle? Then get yourself to e-Bay, where the city's Holiday Committee is auctioning off the role of "Imperial Illuminator."  In other words, you get to be the person who flips the switch that lights the giant candle in Centre Square Friday at 8 p.m. Bidding starts at $50. As of Friday evening, no one had entered a bid, but the bidding will last until Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.

Ice Carving, Tubas, Mummers and More at Peace Candle Lighting

Numerous events scheduled to kick off holidays in Easton.

Easton's Peace Candle lighting is about more than just pushing a button. It's a big community even, drawing a giant crowd to Centre Square each year on the Friday night after Thanksgiving. And in the hours leading up to the lighting, people need things to do, including ice carvers from the Northampton Community College Culinary Arts Program, a Mummers band, and the Easton debut of TubaChristmas, which -- as the name implies -- features Christmas music played solely by tuba players. Here's the schedule of what will be happening Downtown next Friday: Throughout the evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., you'll find other activities in the square, including horse-Drawn carriage and tracklkess train rides, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, and a Toys-For…

Photos: Peace Candle Goes Up in Easton

Easton's biggest holiday decoration will be lit in ceremony November 23.

It's the week before Thanksgiving, and in Easton that means that Centre Square's Soldiers' & Sailor's Monument is turning into a giant candle. That 61-year-old tradition continued Wednesday as a group of city workers -- joined by volunteer iron workers from Local No. 36 -- put up the Peace Candle.  The candle is over 100 feet tall -- the flame at the top is around 12 feet -- and made of wood and fiberglass. It is set to be lit next Friday night at 8 p.m.

Easton Peace Candle Goes Up Wednesday

The city's biggest holiday decoration due to be lit next week.

Say goodbye to the monument in Easton's Centre Square, at least for the next few months. On Wednesday, the city is due to put up the Peace Candle, the giant annual holiday decoration that covers the monument. The candle is scheduled to be lit next Friday night, a ceremony that's one of Easton's biggest events of the year.  It typically stays up from November until well after the New Year. Easton's began fundraising efforts earlier this year to replace the candle, a job expected to cost $25,000.

6 Things to Do in Easton This Weekend

Run for the Boy Scouts, walk for the Peace Candle, and more....

Good morning everyone. Friday has arrived, and that means we look ahead to what's happening this weekend in Easton. 1. Nearly three years ago, retired Easton cop Tim Lambert and his daughter were killed in a car crash. Lambert was a local Cub Scout leader and last year, Easton's Boy Scouts held a memorial 5k/10k run in his honor. That race returns to Easton Saturday morning at Scott Park. Registration -- it's $15 to participate -- begins at 8 a.m., with a one-mile "fun run" for kids at 9 a.m. That's followed by a 10K walk/run at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K run at 10 a.m. 2. If you're still feeling limber, head to the Karl Stirner Arts Trail between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to Blaze a Trail For the Peace Candle. Tickets are $10, and buying one enters …

5 Things to Know Today, September 24

Easton City Council changes its meeting time/place, fundraiser for the Peace Candle, and more...

  1. Easton City Council meets tonight, rather than Wednesday, due to Yom Kippur. And the meeting will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on the South Side, one of council's occasional visits to city neighborhoods. 2. Last month, we reported on new efforts to raise money to upgrade Easton's Peace Candle. Here's another one: DeLorezno's Italian Restaurant  -- 1210 Knox Ave. in Forks Township  -- will donate 10 percent of sales between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. this evening to help restore the candle.  3. Speaking of Forks Township, did you know Forks and Palmer have their own Patch? Check it out, and like them on Facebook. 4. Easton's Block Watch holds its quarterly meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at the River of God Fellowship church at 813 Reynolds…
