Nelson Mayers, who was shot by an Easton police officer in August, wanted after missing a hearing on drug charges.
Nelson Mayers, who was shot in the leg by Easton police in August, is now a wanted a man. Two weeks ago, Mayers missed his preliminary hearing on the drug possession charge stemming from the night of the shooting. Last week, a Northampton County judge signed a warrant for Mayers arrest, the Express-Times reports. Mayers was shot Aug. 21 during a police investigation into gunfire on the South Side of Easton. According to an account given by District Attorney John Morganelli last month, Mayers ran from a police officer who encountered him and a group of men near Wirebach Street. At one point, Mayers turned from the officer -- Patrolman Eric Campbell -- and pulled a black object from the waistband of his pants. Campbell fired two shots, one …

A man who was shot and wounded by Easton police last month is headed to county court on drug possession charges. However, Nelson Mayers wasn't in court Wednesday to defend himself against the allegation that he was carrying packets of heroin on the night a city police officer shot him in the leg. According to an account given by District Attorney John Morganelli last month, Mayers ran from a police officer who encountered him and a group of men near Wierbach Street. District Attorney says Easton cop's shooting of a suspect is justified.
District Attorney says an Easton patrolman who shot and wounded a man last week was justified in using deadly force.
On the night of August 21, Easton police Officer Eric Campbell was patrolling the city's South Side, investigating reported gunfire. He encountered a group of men. One of them, later indentified as Nelson Mayers, ran away, heading down Wierbach Street near Centre Street. Campbell gave chase, calling for Mayers to stop. Mayers, 25, of 628 W. Berwick St. reached into his waistband, and pulled out a black object, and held it out towards Campbell. Campbell fired two shots from his handgun, one of them hitting Mayers in the leg. Mayers fell to the ground, and tossed away the thing he'd pulled from his waistband: a black cellphone. That's the account of the shooting given Thursday by Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli, who has …

Tuesday's shooting of a man by a police officer on the South Side comes 10 years after a pair of incidents where Easton police officers shot suspects.
On Tuesday night, a man was shot by an Easton police officer in the city's South Side. As of Wednesday evening, city police had said very little about the incident, beyond identifying the man who was shot and the officer -- Patrolman Eric Campbell -- who did the shooting. Covering the shooting late last Tuesday night (and early Wednesday morning), I realized I'd been in similar situations 10 years ago. Twice in 2002, while working as a newspaper reporter, I covered incidents in Easton where city police officers used their firearms during an investigation. The first case happened in February, just a few blocks from the scene of last week's shooting. On the night of Feb. 25, 2002, a man named Michael Hogan was shot and wounded by police in …

Patrolman Eric Campbell is the officer who shot a man on the South Side this week.
Easton police have identified the officer involved in a shooting earlier this week on the South Side. Police say it was Patrolman Eric Campbell, a six-year veteran of the force, who shot a man during a shots-fired investigation Tuesday night, according to a news release. The release also officially identified Nelson A. Mayers, 25, as the man shot and wounded by Campbell, who works the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift. This was the first time police have named Campbell or Mayers, although Mayers family members and witnesses had identified Mayers the night of the shooting. Police were in the neighborhood investigating calls about gunfire Mayers, 25, of the 600 block of Berwick Street, was charged Wednesday with possession of heroin following a …

Nelson A. Mayers, reportedly shot by Easton police, is accused of possession of heroin.
A man who was reportedly shot by Easton police Tuesday night had heroin with him at the time of the shooting. Nelson A. Mayers, 25, was charged Wednesday with possession of a controlled substance. Police have not yet identified the man shot by an officer during an investigation on the South Side Tuesday, but family members and witnesses at the scene have said it was Mayers. Officers were in the neighborhood responding to a report of gunshots. At some point one officer -- who has not been identified and has been placed on paid leave -- shot a man he encountered on the 600 block of Wirebach Street. Court papers filed with District Judge Daniel Corpora offer no direct connection to the shooting. However, the affadavit of probale cause says …

An investigation into a police-involved shooting on Easton's South Side should wrap up by next Tuesday, according to Mayor Sal Panto. "These things aren't investigated in two minutes," Panto said at Wednesday night's City Council meeting. Meanwhile, Capt. Scott Casterline told WFMZ Wednesday that the officer who shot and wounded a man late Tuesday night has been placed on administrative leave. That officer -- whom officials have not identified -- was investigating two reports of gunfire on the South Side when he encountered a man at Centre and Wirebach streets. At some point during the encounter, the officer shot the man, police said. Witnesses, and the man's family, have identified that man as Nelson A. Mayers, 25, of New Jersey. His …

A man was shot and wounded by an Easton police officer responding to a report of gunfire Tuesday night on the city's South Side. Police did not release the man's name, but family members at the scene identified him as Nelson Mayers. The family members and several witnesses said Mayers was shot in the leg. According to police, the incident began at 9:38 p.m. with a call that shots had been fired in the 100 block of W. St. Joseph Street. About 20 minutes later, another shots-fired call came in at the 400 block of Williams Street. At 10:14 p.m., a police officer investigating the gunfire came across a man near the intersection of Centre and Wirebach streets.
