Despite some concerns, Easton Historic District Commission gives OK to opening stage of Third Street deck.
Easton's Historic District Commission has approved the first phase of the city's new parking deck on S. Third Street. The commission voted Monday night to allow the city to install the pre-cast concrete skeleton of the deck, something that should happen this July. The vote came just hours after Mayor Sal Panto announced his wish to move city government operations to the planned intermodal building, which will be connected to the new parking deck. Panto told commission members the concrete needs to be poured in April in time for it to cure and be ready for transport in the summer. "So we're on a pretty tight schedule," he said. Mayor Sal Panto says Easton's city offices should be inside new intermodal building.
Easton Mayor Sal Panto wants to move the city government offices out of the Alpha Building and into the new intermodal unit on S. Third Street. Panto made that announcement Monday afternoon, saying he will take the plan before City Council Wednesday evening. The mayor said the city would sell the Alpha Building and try to move into the intermodal -- a $26 million project that will include a three-story structure and a new city parking deck -- by the first part of 2015. "Downtown is really the place for City Hall, there’s no doubt about that," Panto told reporters at a news conference at City Hall. City Council takes up parking lot issue again, an announcement on the intermodal, and more...
Good morning everyone. With a new week here, it's therefore time to look at what's going on in the next few days in Easton. 1. Mayor Sal Panto will make "a major announcement" Monday at 2:30 p.m. at City Hall about the intermodal project. 2. It's Lehigh Valley Beer Week, and a few Easton restaurants are taking part. Be sure to read our complete schedule of local events. 3. It's Valentine's Day on Thursday. If you're looking to do some last-minute shopping, the Easton Main Street Initiative is hosting a men's shopping night. 4. The Pink Floyd Experience plays Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre. 5. City Council meets Wednesday at 6 p.m. Last time council met, it tabled a vote on seizing a downtown parking lot by eminent domain.

Downtown Easton movie theater vanishes to make room for intermodal center.
Demolition work began this morning on Easton's Marquis Theater. The city is demolishing the building -- and the vacant Perkins next door -- to make way for its proposed intermodal unit.

Ronnie...The renovation spending now looks shortsighted in retrospect. We will never recoup that money before selling the building. Seems there is no plan for Easton accept for what becomes expedient to the Mayor at any given time. Perhaps some open community dialogue about the prospects would have been beneficial...and I don't want any excuses that this took place during the hearings regarding …   more ›
