Easton Honors Martin Luther King, Jr.

City church, community organizations hold events to remember Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although Easton's kids weren't in class Monday, that doesn't mean they weren't learning. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day programs around the city gave children a chance to learn about King himself, and also about his ideals, such as non-violence. That's what kids were learning about late Monday afternoon at the Easton Boys & Girls Club, answering questions on how to avoid and prevent bullying. At Greater Shiloh Church, the congregation gathered -- as it does every year -- to remember King through prayer, words, music and dance -- and in one case --miming. There was music at the Easton Area Community Center, both from students from Northampton Community College and from the choir at the River Valley Waldorf School in Upper Black Eddy.

Shiloh Church Blesses Bikers

Dozens of bikers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York get Easton church's blessing.

There were Buffalo Soldiers, from Monroe County. There was the American Legion, the Latin American Motorcycle Association in Bethlehem, and a group called the Psychotic Riders from New Jersey. Dozens of riders from all over coverged Saturday morning on Greater Shiloh Church in Easton for a mass "blessing of the bikes," bestowed on motorcycle club members. "Doesn't matter where you come from, you've had a safe trip getting here," said Alvis Williams, president of the Monroe County Buffalo Soldiers, the group that organized the ceremony. The motorcycle clubs came from all over, local riders as well as New Jersey, New York, even some riders from West Virginia, according to Shiloh Pastor Phillip Davis. There were Harleys, Kawasakis, and big …

Easton Church Will Bless Motorcycles

Greater Shiloh Church in Easton will bless motorcycles Saturday morning.

They call themselves the Buffalo Soldiers. Their full name is the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers Motorcycle Clubs, and their mission is to remember the contributions of black soldiers in post Civil War America. On Saturday, members of the group's Pocono chapter will be in Easton, as part of Greater Shiloh Church's motorcycle blessing ceremony. "Just like any other season, the motorcycle riding season is important as well," organizer and church member DeWayne Coney said in a news release. "This blessing is for the riders because we want them to be safe and careful. That's what a bike blessing is all about."  The blessing ceremony will last from 11 a.m. to noon, and will be performed by Senior Pastor Phillip Davis.

Martin Luther King Events Planned Around Easton

Greater Shiloh Church will let its Orators speak; Easton Boys & Girls celebrate mentoring.

Each year, Easton's Greater Shiloh Church hosts what's arguably the city's main Martin Luther King Jr. event, with songs, stories, prayers, and speeches by local political figures. This year, the church is adding a new feature to the service: The kids who are part of its Orators program will play a major role in the event, according to Roy Schuler, who runs the Orators. This year's Martin Luther King remembrance beings at Shiloh at 3 p.m. Monday. Meanwhile, the Boys & Girls Club of Easton will make the day a "day of service," with a program at 5 p.m. at the club's South Side facilities. Clubs members will hear success stories from alumni, as well as talks from Frank Tavani, the head football coach for Lafayette College, and motivational …
