The national average for self-serve gas has increased for ten straight days to the highest price in more than a month, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The national average this for a gallon is $3.588, up 4.9 cents from last week, but still about 14 cents lower than a year ago. But according to the report, the year over year difference will likely continue to fade due to higher crude oil prices and refinery maintenance that decreases supply. In the Lehigh Valley, gas prices went up five cents since last week, from $3.48 a gallon to $3.53 a gallon. That's 25 cents cheaper than this time last year. After months of a steady decline, gas prices saw their first uptick last week, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The national average for a gallon of gas rose 1.7 cents from last week. In the Lehigh Valley, it went down by one penny since last week, making the average price $3.41 for a gallon of regular. That’s 37 cents lower than prices last year at this time. With a steady decline in gas prices throughout April, the average price per gallon is nearly 45 cents lower than a year ago, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The national average this week is $3.508 for a gallon, down .7 cents from last week. In the Lehigh Valley, gas prices dropped another 3.4 cents a gallon to an average of $3.42, which is 47 cents lower than last year’s prices. The Pennsylvania average retail price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline is also $3.463, down 2.7 cents from a week ago. Gas prices in every state—except Idaho—have seen another decrease since last week, according to AAA’s fuel report. In Pennsylvania, the average for a gallon of self-serve regular is $3.552 per gallon down 5.4 cents from a week ago. U.S. gasoline prices in April have continued to fall, the reports states, not just because of weak demand, but oil prices have also moved sharply lower. In the Lehigh Valley, the average price for a gallon is $3.52 per gallon, which is down five cents from a week ago, and 45 cents lower than a year ago. The national average this week is $3.637 for a gallon, down 2.1 cents from last week. March has seen a steady decline in gas prices to the point that gas is cheaper now than last year. This is the longest streak since the price increased 44 cents over 44 days March 22-May 5, 2011. 2012 was an expensive year to drive.
If you found your wallet a little lighter at the end of 2012, your driving may have something to do with that. AAA reports that 2012 was the most expensive year on record for gas prices with a national average of $3.60. The year before, 2011, takes second place with an average of $3.51 and 2008 comes in third with an average of $3.25. “Record high gas prices have made this the most expensive year yet for motorists,” said Jenny M.
