Easton Honors Martin Luther King, Jr.

City church, community organizations hold events to remember Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although Easton's kids weren't in class Monday, that doesn't mean they weren't learning. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day programs around the city gave children a chance to learn about King himself, and also about his ideals, such as non-violence. That's what kids were learning about late Monday afternoon at the Easton Boys & Girls Club, answering questions on how to avoid and prevent bullying. At Greater Shiloh Church, the congregation gathered -- as it does every year -- to remember King through prayer, words, music and dance -- and in one case --miming. There was music at the Easton Area Community Center, both from students from Northampton Community College and from the choir at the River Valley Waldorf School in Upper Black Eddy.

Teacher Sketches Tributes to Sandy Hook Victims

Valerie Davis crafts drawings in memory of students killed in Connecticut school shooting.

After the deadly school shootings, Easton Area Middle School art teacher Valerie Davis said everything was like a blur. "I didn't know how to mourn," she said. Then came another blur: 12 days of non-stop drawing, as Davis created 26 portraits of each of the victims.  "I would start drawing at 5 a.m.," she said. "That's all I did...my whole entire holiday." Davis displayed the results of her work Friday afternoon at the Easton Boys & Girls Club, but she wanted club members to do more than look. She asked the children to look at the pictures, and to write letters that will go to the families of the victims. Davis plans to deliver the letters to Connecticut herself.  Before the kids got to work, they walked the room, examining the portraits. …

Easton Boys & Girls Club Gets New Scoreboard

Kiwanis Club donates funds to replace scoreboard installed in 1974.

The last time Easton's Boys & Girls Club installed a scoreboard in its basketball court, Dr. J. was only in his second year in the NBA. That was 1974, and after nearly 40 years of keeping score for countless basketball games and wrestling matches, the scoreboard had seen better days. "Not only had it lost its luster, it had stopped functioning," said Dean Young, executive director of the club. "We had the city look at it, we had all sorts of electricians look at it, there was really nothing we could do."  That's where the Easton Kiwanis Club came in; the club -- which lists helping local kids as its key goal -- stepped into raise the roughly $6,000 to purchase and install a new scoreboard.  On Monday, the old scoreboard came down and a new…
