Easton Honors Martin Luther King, Jr.

City church, community organizations hold events to remember Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although Easton's kids weren't in class Monday, that doesn't mean they weren't learning. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day programs around the city gave children a chance to learn about King himself, and also about his ideals, such as non-violence. That's what kids were learning about late Monday afternoon at the Easton Boys & Girls Club, answering questions on how to avoid and prevent bullying. At Greater Shiloh Church, the congregation gathered -- as it does every year -- to remember King through prayer, words, music and dance -- and in one case --miming. There was music at the Easton Area Community Center, both from students from Northampton Community College and from the choir at the River Valley Waldorf School in Upper Black Eddy.

Easton Students Mark National Food Day

Middle schoolers help prepare Centennial Park vegetable garden on day devoted to healthy eating.

The students had begun digging through the dirt in Easton's Centennial Park Wednesday when they discovered they weren't alone. "Ewwwwww! Worms!" came the chorus. Ali Miller, a volunteer working with the students, told them the worms were a good sign. Worms mean healthy soil. And with luck, that soil will next year yield a healthy garden producing healthy vegetables for these and other West Ward children. At least that's what the Kellyn Foundation -- working with Easton's Weed & Seed program and the Easton Area Community Center -- is hoping.  On Wednesday, with the help of a handful of Easton Area Middle School students, they began preparing Centennial Park for a set of small vegetable gardens to be planted beginning in March 2013. When …

Great Job Kellyn Foundation! Let's grow a healthier world. The mass produced processed stuff we buy and eat is killing us and taking away our joy. I want to help all I can to promote organic local grown eating as well as recycling. Please keep the articles coming so that we as a community can know how we can help and get involved. Let's top buying this food that is killing up slowly and buy only …   more ›

Three (Charitable) Things to Do This Weekend

A change of pace from our normal weekend round-up.

Every Friday, I usually publish a list of different things to do in Easton over the weekend. This week was no exception, but there's some things that are happening tonight/tomorrow that are a little weightier than what we normally list.  1. The Guardian Angels hold a fundraiser in memory of little Kenyon Stocker. Stocker was just 18 months old when he drowned in a West Ward pool last month. Tonight from 7-9, there'll be a fundraiser for his family at the Easton Area Community Center. 2. American Heart Association Craft Fair at Wilson Area High School. Last year, we profiled 5-year-old Madison Powell, the young chair of the American Heart Association's Heart and Stroke Walk. Powell -- now 6-years-old -- was born with a rare heart defect. On…

Easton PAL to Host Mentoring Day

Easton's Police Athletic League will run mentoring program April 21.

Easton's Police Athletic League (PAL) has joined forces with the local YMCA to provide a mentoring program for city kids. The group is also trying to expand, and plans to reach out to neighboring police departments in hopes of reaching more kids. "We can do a better job of reaching this goal and helping more kids if we ourselves are larger, stronger, and have more resources to draw from," PAL President John Piper said in a news release. "For this reason, we have invited neighboring police departments to be part of our organization and will be changing our name to the Easton Area Police Athletic League to accurately reflect who we are and what we do." The mentoring program will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Easton …

Kudos to reaching out to the children in your community! Not sure if you heard the news that the PA District Attorneys offices have partnered with their local Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies celebrating 100 years/100 Mentors. It is a great collaboration considering mentoring helps children from getting in trouble with the law, helps them get along better with their peers/family, improves …   more ›

Work of Art Becomes Christmas Present for EACC

Bike sculpture on Easton Area Community Center roof dismantled, donated to center kids.

If you've driven by the Easton Area Community Center in the last few months, you've probably noticed the white shape on the roof over the entrance. "So many people would come by and say 'When's the unveiling?'" said center Director Anita Mitchell. In fact, what people were looking at was a work by artist Emil Lukas, what he calls a "site specific installation." He took seven bicycles, and covered them in plastic, as part of Lafayette College's Art of Urban Environments program. "And it worked pretty well," said Lukas, of Stockertown. "It stayed up for a long time, and the bikes were nice and safe." It was Friday afternoon, and the installation was coming down, so that the bikes could become part of the community center, donated to its …
