The event will benefit Special Olympics and is expected to draw hundreds of participants. Cost to participate is $50. 2013 Plunge Schedule Parking: All parking will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that Larry Holmes Drive in front of Scott Park will be closed to allow for easy walking and access to the plunge area. There are numerous metered parking spots and lots available within a short walk of Scott Park. Shoes: All plungers must wear shoes into the water. Bare feet are not allowed for safety reasons. Easton man accused of fatal shooting over summer appears in court Friday for preliminary hearing, but gets continuance for not having public defender.
Naheem Adams, accused in the fatal shooting of an Easton man last summer, doesn't seem to be in a rush for a speedy trial. Appearing before District Judge Richard Yetter Friday afternoon, the man accused of killing George Jeter in July received a continuance of his preliminary hearing. A new date has been set for 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 before Yetter. Yetter wondered why Adams had yet to file an application for a public defender twice. Adams told the judge he was awaiting a decision by his family. The judge also wondered why Adams didn't sign a document for his right to a trial in 365 days when he appeared in county court on Dec. 4. "I'm not signing anything," said Adams, who wore an orange Northampton County Prison jumpsuit. City police had …

A Palmer Township man died this week as a result of a fall at his home, according to the Lehigh County coroner.
An 83-year-old Palmer Township man died as a result of an accidental fall at his home at 72 Moor Drive, according to the Lehigh County coroner. Raymond Bassinger was pronounced dead at 7:59 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's University Hospital, Fountain Hill. Bassinger broke his leg when he fell, the coroner said in a news release. Among older adults (those 65 or older), falls are the leading cause of injury death, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC says of fall-related deaths:

School board set to vote on tax breaks to help develop six sites in the city.
Easton is once again looking to set up Keystone Opportunity Zones to boost economic development in the city. The KOZs are a state program that provides tax exemptions to people who develop abandoned or blighted properties. The city's list, presented Tuesday night to the board by Easton Mayor Sal Panto and Economic Development Director Gretchen Longenbach, includes a broad range of properties, from abandoned buildings to still-in-construction projects. Easton needs the school board's approval -- as well as that of Northampton County Council -- before it can present its plan to the state.
