17th Congressional District Democratic Candidate Matt Cartwright paddled down the Delaware River to Easton to stump for his campaign and the environment.
On a picture-perfect day made for a canoe ride down the Delaware River and glad-handing at campaign stops, Matt Cartwright, the Democratic candidate for Congress in the newly redrawn 17th District, managed to do both. On Sunday, Cartwright ended a three-day, 30-mile canoe trip down the pristine waters of the Delaware with supporters and members of the Sierra Club at a picnic thrown for him in Scott Park in Easton. There to greet him was Mayor Sal Panto. "Coming to Easton is a huge part of the campaign," said Cartwright, a progressive who unseated 10-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Holden in the Democratic primary in April. Cartwright, a Scranton attorney, said he intended to get know his constituents in the Easton area and work closely with…

Democratic primary for 17th district will be decided Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Democratic voters in the Easton area -- as well as numerous other counties -- will decide who they want to represent them in Congress: U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, or challenger Matt Cartwright. Holden, 55 and from Schuylkill County, has been in Congress for 20 years, but it was only until recently -- due to congressional redistricting -- that his representing the Lehigh Valley was even a possibility. In addition to the Easton area and much of Northampton County, the new 17th district includes Holden's home county, as well Monroe, Lackwanna, Luzerne and Carbon counties. Cartwright, 50 and from the town of Moosic south of Scranton, is an attorney who has been presented as a more liberal alternative to Holden, who's known as a "Blue …

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer supports Tim Holden during Lehigh Valley visit.
Congressman Tim Holden -- who's running to represent the Easton area -- already has the backing of many prominent local Democrats. On Friday, he got support from a Democrat who's a bit farther up the political ladder: House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. Hoyer, who represents Maryland's 5th district and has spent 31 years in Congress, stopped in Easton and Upper Nazareth Friday, having lunch at Josie's in Centre Square following a visit to Martin Guitar. They spoke to Eastonians during Josie's busy lunchtime rush, and were greeted by Easton Mayor Sal Panto, City Councilman Ken Brown, County Controller Steve Barron, and School Board Member Frank Pintabone. Holden is facing a primary challenge from Lackawanna County attorney Matt Cartwright to …

Matt Cartwright, running to represent the new 17th district, meets with Easton NAACP.
America needs to invest more money in its infrastructure, congressional candidate Matt Cartwright told members of the Easton NAACP Monday night. Cartwright, a Democrat who's running against U. S. Rep. Tim Holden in the April 24 primary to represent the newly created 17th district, spoke briefly before the NAACP as members met at Trinity Episcopal Church. Holden, also a Democrat, was invited to the meeting, but was unable to get away from Washington. "We have to compete with the Chinese in this country," said Cartwright, who recently opened a campaign office on Ferry Street. "We're not talking about 2012, we're talking about 2050. Roads, bridges, rail, high speed rail...they're building it, why aren't we?" Cartwright, an attorney from the…

Easton area Democrats welcome U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, denounce the redistricting that brought him here.
Northampton County Democratic politicians welcomed the region's new congressman Wednesday, even as they denounced the redistricting that brought him here. U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, was in Easton Wednesday to introduce himself to his new constituents, whom he inherited after a new redistricting plan moved much of Northampton County into Holden's 17th district. Speaking at a news conference at the county courthouse, Holden said he shares people's frustration with the new district, and promised to get to know Northampton County and its issues. "I will be available. I will be visible," Holden said, adding that he'll establish an office in the county if he wins re-election this year. The new district lines become official in January 2013. Holden, …
