Like Books? Head to Eddyside Park

The AAUW's annual book sale is underway.

When I was a reporter, covering the AAUW book sale was an assignment that never felt like a chore.

Every year, the American Association of University Women holds its massive, week-long sale to raise scholarship money.

The sale's moved around the Easton area over the years, but since 2009, the group has been set up in Eddyside pool house along Route 611.

And for me, covering a room full of books is like an Eagles fan covering the training camp in Bethlehem. If you like books, this is a feast. There's everything from the Great Dialogues of Plato to what seemed like a collection of the entire run of Garfield.

Books are gathered into what seemed like Jeopardy categories: Writers & Writing, World History, Healthy Living.

You could get little glimpses of the lives of the books. Inside a Bible, there was an inscription: "Marie Timmons, May 22, 1949."

There were maybe a dozen people browsing Friday morning; the sale had begun the day before, the book dealers lining up early and paying a $10 entrance fee -- it's free for everyone else -- to get first crack at the books. Some of them spent hundreds of dollars.

"One lady took the dolly out to her car four times," said AAUW volunteer Annette Stoody.

The sale runs until Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day except Sept. 25, when the hours are from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
