Lafayette College and Lehigh University met on the gridiron at Goodman Stadium for the 147th edition of one of the oldest college rivalries in the nation. The rivalry began in 1884 when Lafayette blanked Lehigh 50-0 in Easton, Pa.. A sell out crowd of over 16,000 was in attendence to watch Lehigh rout Lafayette 37-13 in the final regular season football game.
The match up started out close with the only scoring of the first quarter being a late 52 yard run by Lehigh running back Keith Sherman to put the Mountain Hawks on top 7-0.
Lehigh would lengthen their lead in the second quarter with a 30 yard field goal by kicker Tim Divers at 9:13 making it 10-7. The Mountain Hawks added another touchdown with four minutes left in the half on a three yard pass from quarterback Chris Lum to tight end Zach Hayden. At the end of the half Lehigh led Lafayette 17-0.
Lehigh scored another 20 points in the third quarter to put it out of reach for Lafayette. Wide receiver Matt Fitz ran for a 16 yard touchdown. Outside line backer Colin Newton recovered a fumble and ran 46 yards for the touchdown, but Divers missed the point after. Mountain Hawks quarterback Lum completed Lehigh's final score of the day on a four yard keeper to stake a 37-0 lead.
Lafayette was finally able to get on the board in the fourth quarter with two scores. Quarterback Ryan O'Neil completed a 16 yard touchdown pass to tight end Brandon Hall. Running back Alan Elder had a one yard run for the Leopard's second touchdown, but kicker Austin O'Brien missed the point after.
Lehigh quarterback Chris Lum was named the MVP of The Rivalry game. This was the Mountain Hawks ninth straight win during the 2011 season. Despite Lehigh's victory Lafayette still leads the overall series 76-66-5, but when the two schools square off in Bethlehem, Pa. the Mountain Hawks have a 41-36 record.
Prior to the game Lehigh had already wrapped up the Patriot League title and earned a first round bye in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to play at 9-2 Towson on December 3.
