Vietnam Memorial Planned At Easton High

If you graduated from Easton Area High School, and served in the Vietnam War, they want you on this wall.

A group of Easton area residents is raising money to put up a memorial to the Rovers who fought -- and some cases, died -- in the Vietnam War.

On Tuesday night, they presented their plans to the Easton Area School Board.

"It's a smaller rendition of what’s basically in D.C.," said Lou Ferrone, a member of the group.

Several dozen Easton graduates served in the war, according to the group's website. Seven of them never made it home.

The 8-foot high wall will feature all of their names, with the only requirement being that the people on it served in the war and graduated from Easton High School. There will also be a space for names on the pavers surrounding the wall.

School board member Pat Vulcano asked if Easton residents who didn't go to the high school were eligible.

The group actually found 10 different names on the memorial in Washington, D.C., of those who came from Easton but didn't attend the high school.

"If people from or Notre Dame want to buy one of the pavers, that’s fine, But the wall is reserved for Easton Area High School," said Chuck Snyder, one of the volunteers.

And those graduates had to have served in Vietnam, and not just during the war.

"Guys went in wanting to go to Vietnam, one ended up in Ethiopia, one ended up in Germany, there’s not much we could do for them," Snyder said.

The group is hoping to have the memorial completed in the next two years. So far, they've raised $37,000 and have several fundraising events planned. They'll be at this weekend and have a planned for Sept. 23 at the high school.
