Lafayette Celebrates LGBT History Month

Lafayette College will sponsor numerous programs over the next few weeks in honor of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender History Month.

One of the highlights is the keynote speech by John Corvino, a gay-rights advocate and chairman of the philosophy department at Wayne State University in Detroit.


"Using his trademark combination of logical rigor, sensitivity and humor, he challenges people from all sides to rethink easy assumptions in the increasingly divisive culture wars," the college said in a news release.

Corvino's talk, “'Haters,’ ‘Sinners,’ and the Rest of Us: The Gay Debate Today" is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 in Colton Chapel.


Other events include:

• David L. Sr. and Helen J. Temple Visiting Lecture by playwright and performer John Dayo Aliya at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 in Hugel Science Center, room 100.
• Film screening and discussion of Brokeback Mountain at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 in Hugel Science Center, room 100.
• Film screening of Before Stonewall at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 21 in the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights auditorium, room 104, followed by a discussion led by Gene Kelly, associate dean of intercultural development and director of gender and sexuality programs;
• Film screening and discussion of Kissing Jessica Stein at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 in Hugel Science Center, room 100;
• Panel discussion on Marriage Equality Update: Post-DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29 in the Marlo Room, Farinon College Center.
