Easton Teachers Plan Rally, Defend Positions

Educators will meet next week before school board budget vote.

Like their colleagues in , Easton Area School District teachers will hold a rally next week to protest the budget cuts could cost them their jobs and students their programs.

Kevin Deely, president of the Easton Area Education Association, made the announcement in a video posted on YouTube Wednesday morning.

The school district has a $12.9 million gap it needs to close in order to balance its budget. School officials have said laying off teachers may be necessary to close that deficit.

"It's unfair to expect the teachers to carry the entire burden of this alone," Deely says in the video.

The rally is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 at the school district offices on Bushkill Drive. It's set to coincide with the budget vote the school board is expected to make that night.

The board will also hold a six hour budget hearing that day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Last week, the EAEA said it would for next year, arguing it would save the district $7.4 million. The district had asked the teachers to take a freeze for two years.

In the video, Deely outlines other ways the union thinks the district can save money, including an early retirement incentive. We've embedded the video here so you can watch the whole thing.
