Easton School Official Files Whistleblower Lawsuit

Easton middle school principal Stephen Furst claims he was demoted for reporting improper activity by another school official.

Earlier this year, the Easton Area School District moved several administrators into new jobs.

Among them was Stephen Furst, who went from being director of teaching and learning to seventh and eighth grade principal at the Easton Area Middle School.

The district called it an "administrative reorganization."

But Furst said that in his case, it was something else: retaliation for shedding light on alleged criminal activity by another school official.

That's according to the Morning Call, which says Furst has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the school district.

He's alleging that the district demoted him and denied him a raise because he reported that former technology director Thomas Drago was using his computer without permission.

The district's solicitor told the newspaper that Furst's job switch had nothing to do with Drago.

Furst's reporting of Drago's activity led to a criminal investigation, which led to Drago, 54, of Bushkill Township, being charged with wiretapping for allegedly recording a closed meeting without the knowledge of school officials.

In court last month, Drago's attorney said his client would apply for the first-time offender's program, which could allow him to ultimately have his record expunged.
