The Nurse and the Lawyer

In a real crisis situation who would you want at your side, a Nurse or a Lawyer?

Once upon a time there were two friends who enjoyed riding bicycles together. They rode everywhere enjoying the scenery of the cities and the countryside. They developed a strong bond of friendship and always looked out for one another.

While riding one day on a bike trail one of the riders hit a large stone that had rolled onto the trail. When his front tire hit the stone his bicycle twisted abruptly throwing the surprised rider into his friend resulting in a horrendous tangled mess of metal and gears. Both riders were badly bruised and bleeding barely able to move.

As they laid there only able to pray for help they could hear voices approaching. “At last help is on the way”, they thought. Sure enough, two people approaching from different directions stopped to help when they realized the seriousness of the situation. One was a Lawyer and the other a Nurse.

The Nurse jumped into action checking pulses, assessing the damage, listening to and comforting the victims, and doing everything she could to dress their wounds and stop the bleeding. The compassionate Nurse instinctively offered the same care and assistance to both injured riders as quickly as possible.

The Lawyer also jumped into action doing what came naturally to him. After assuring the riders he was going to help he quickly started asking questions; “Who caused this wreck? Which one of you riders failed to maintain control of his bicycle? Who built these bicycles? This gross negligence will not go unpunished!” He called his office. He called his partners. He called the press. He called everyone but the ambulance.

Meanwhile the Nurse kept busy attending to the injured riders and also managed to dial 911. While the riders were actually being helped by the Nurse, the Lawyer was busy building his case. The riders, unable to do much without the Nurse’s help, just took it all in wondering how it would all end up.

Years later the riders’ wounds were healed and they were each physically doing well thanks to the Nurse’s caring, compassionate and quick attention that day. Had the Nurse not stopped the bleeding and called for more help those two men may not have made it. They were both grateful for the Nurse’s help.

The Lawyer’s help however fractured their friendship. They no longer shared bicycle rides together. One man received a small sum of cash but the other lost all his savings once the lawyer ‘helped’ convince them that this “supposed accident” had to be someone’s fault. The two men never spoke again. The popular bike trail was closed due to the enormous insurance policy now required because of the Lawyer’s lawsuit against the municipality. The tax payers just couldn’t afford it. The bicycle manufacturer and tire factory were forced to shut down and lay off hundreds of workers after the Lawyer got through with them. New erroneous regulations because of the Lawyer’s “help” made it impossible for them to compete with cheaper imported Chinese bicycles.

The Lawyer, convinced his job was done, went home and counted his money.

Our country is wrecked. We are hemorrhaging jobs. Incomes are suffering. People are losing their homes. Taxes and regulations from Washington are killing business. But wait! Hope is on the horizon. Here comes a Nurse!

17th District Congressional Candidate Laureen Cummings will stop the bleeding, the spending, and the crushing regulations and help get America back on a path to recovery.
