Wilson Woman Sentenced for Fatal Hit-and-Run DUI

Kelly Ann Marazas will serve three to six years in prison for killing Jose Santiago, 22, of Easton, in a drunken hit-and-run crash last December.

Kelly Ann Marazas has been sentenced to three to six years in prison by District Judge Richard Yetter , plus four years of probation for , 22, of Southside Easton last December, reports The Morning Call.

Marazas, a Wilson resident, plead guilty to homicide by vehicle while drunk, aggravated assault by vehicle, driving while under the influence, and other offenses in connection with the crash.

The sentence is the result of a plea bargain with Assistant District Attorney Abraham Kassis, who insisted on the three-year minimum mandatory sentence for the homicide charge but agreed Marazas will not be jailed for additional time for the other charges.

According to police, Marazas was driving her SUV along Northampton Street on the evening of December 11, 2011 when she struck Santiago, who was putting something into the trunk of his car on the 1600 block of Northampton Street.

It was additionally revealed during court proceedings that in her rush to leave the scene, she ran over Santiago, striking him a second time, and that the two passengers in Santiago's truck, including his 2-year-old daughter, were also injured.

Marazas was also involved in a second crash a few blocks away and reportedly attacked a witness who took her car keys after the wreck.

It was reported earlier that , and did not post bail, set at $50,000, because she felt she deserved to be in jail.

Her attorney, Angelo Perrucci, Jr. of Wilson, said previously his client had no desire to post bail. He noted that she has never made "any attempt to justify or excuse" what happened.

"There is not a word that I could possibly say to justify, or ease the pain I have caused the family," Marazas is quoted by the Morning Call as saying to Santiago's surviving family, who attended Wednesday's court proceedings. "But I am nonetheless very sorry and I hope you find peace and comfort."
