Silk Mill Gets $1.5 Million Grant

U.S. Department of Commerce grant will help build infrastructure at Easton Silk Mill property.

Easton's largest economic development project has gotten a boost from the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded the Silk Mill redevelopment project a $1.5 million grant, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced Wednesday.

Cartwright said in a news release that the grant "provides an opportunity to put people back to work while improving Easton's infrastructure."

The money is expected to create 50 to 80 new jobs, and will be used to fund access roads, parking, as well as water, sewer and storm water improvements on the 13th Street property.

The plan is to turn the former textile mill into a "creative commercial" space that would also include residential units.

The project is being handled by private developer Mark Mulligan, who is also overseeing the renovations of the Governor Wolf and Alpha buildings in downtown Easton.
