Recycle Rewards Contract Approved

Whether the cost is passed on to residents remains to be decided.

Residents who use the city garbage collection services will soon have the chance to receive coupons and other promotions for their neighborhood's recycling efforts.

The Easton City Council approved a contract with at it's meeting Monday evening .

The program will take about 90 days to implement, city officials have previously said, and will involve outfitting a truck with an RFID reader and all residents with RFID-tagged recycling bins.

The city will also go to single-stream recycling, meaning all recyclables, including paper and cardboard will go all in the same bin when the program is rolled ouy.

The agreement will cost the city $40,000 annually, or a bit over $5 per household. The city has not yet decided whether or not to pass the cost on to residents through their garbage bills yet.

City waste hauler Raritan Valley will pay for the cost of outfitting its trucks.

City public works director David Hopkins said previously he hopes the program will help the city better track recycling rates and raise them, putting the city in a better position for negotiating its waste hauling contract in 2014 and making more money back from recycling performance grants.
