Northampton County Cuts Courthouse Music

County executive says Northampton can't pay royalties for music inside building.

If you've ever spent any time at the Northampton County Government Center -- or even called it and been put on hold -- you've likely heard music.

But the days of the county piping in music to the courthouse are over. According to news reports, county Executive John Stoffa ordered the music shut off Monday after the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers demanded the county pay royalty fees.

According to the Associated Press, Stoffa informed county employees this week there wasn't money in the budget to pay the $2,343 fee.

"It's not a lot of money, but I can't see taxpayers paying for us to hear music in the work arena," Stoffa told WFMZ.

The county is looking for ways to replace the music, including the possibility of using local bands.

"If we came up with a documentary that said this is Northampton County with 296,000 people, it would put them to sleep. That's not what people want to hear," said Stoffa.
