LANTA Gets $14 million in Federal Funding

Some of the federal grant money announced Tuesday will go to Easton's intermodal unit.

Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff was in Allentown Tuesday to announce $14.4 million in funding for LANTA.

While most of that money will go to LANTA's garage in Allentown, $4 million of it is making its way to Easton, for the.

"Residents of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton will have better access to jobs, medical appointments and other services with improved transportation choices as a result of these funds,” Rogoff said in a news release.  "We're also helping to create jobs at a time when they are needed most."

The intermodal unit -- slated for South Third Street -- will house a new bus terminal, parking garage, commercial space and a National High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Easton has borrowed another to fund the project.

The city will tear down the vacant Marquis Theater and Perkins restaurant on Third Street to build the intermodal. That demolition work is expected to begin this week.
