Easton Wants Money for Blight Elimination, Public Market

City council will hold hearings Wednesday on requests for state grant money.

Easton City Council will hold hearings Wednesday on whether to ask the state for $600,000 to redevelop blighted properties and help the forthcoming "public market" on Northampton Street.

That money would come from the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

The Greater Easton Development Partnership is asking for a $300,000 grant to help give loans to vendors who want to set up space at the new market, planned for 325 Northampton St., the former Weller Center.

That space is currently home to the Easton Farmers' Market's winter mart on Saturdays. Last year, the city gave the GEDP $1 million to turn the space into a permanent indoor food market.

The city's Redevelopment Authority is requesting a $300,000 grant for its blight elimination program.

Council meets Wednesday at 6 p.m. on the sixth floor of city hall.
