Victim Identified in Fatal I-78 Crash

Hackettstown, NJ man killed in fiery crash Monday morning on Interstate 78.

State police have identified the man who was killed Monday morning in an accident at the toll plaza on Interstate 78 near Easton.

Daniel C. Murphy, 65, of Hackettstown, NJ, died after a tractor trailer collided with his car, which was stopped at the toll booth on the westbound side of the highway in Williams Township.

According to police, both vehicles caught fire after the crash. The truck driver managed to get out of his cab, but Murphy was trapped inside his Ford Taurus, police said, and died at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation. Police have not released the truck driver's name.

Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission spokesman Joe Donnelly said the crash shut down the highway for several hours Monday, with westbound drivers in New Jersey were redirected to Route 22.

The lane where the crash happened remained close Tuesday, with the DRJTBC warning drivers to expect delays.

"While the Commission has examined the barrier toll plaza’s overall structural integrity and determined it to be satisfactory the operational functionality and safety of the facility’s far left toll collection lane was compromised by Monday’s accident," the DRJTBC said in a news release.

It's too early to determine when the lane will reopen, the commission said.
