'Tragedy on Both Sides:' Killer Gets 20-40 Years in Easton Drug Murder

Naheem Adams gets maximum prison sentence in Easton drug murder.

Naheem Adams was only 20 years old when he shot and killed George Jeter in Easton last year.

He might be 60 when he gets out of prison.

Adams, now 21, was sentenced Friday in Northampton County to spend 20-40 years in state prison, according to published reports.

"This is a tragedy, a tragedy on both sides," Judge Emil Giordano said, as quoted in the Express-Times

The judge noted a 28-year-old man was dead and another young man was on his way to prison, all over a $30 drug transaction.

Jeter, of South 14th Street, was shot to death July 27, 2012 on the 1400 block of Butler Street. According to court records, a witness saw Adams -- who goes by the nickname "Dot" -- fleeing the scene.

Another witness saw Adams in the vicinity of the shooting before Jeter was killed.

Police say they recovered two small-caliber shell casings from the scene. An autopsy later found two small-caliber bullets inside Jeter's body.

Prosecutors had argued at trial that Adams and Jeter were rival drug dealers and that Adams had killed Jeter in a dispute over customers.

Defense attorneys had argued that the prosecution had only circumstantial evidence and nothing to tie Adams to the scene of the crime.

Jeter was one of six homicide victims in the city last year, the most violent year in Easton in at least four decades.
