Police Shooting Still Under Investigation

Easton officer who shot man placed on administrative leave, police captain says.

An investigation into a should wrap up by next Tuesday, according to Mayor Sal Panto.

"These things aren't investigated in two minutes," Panto said at Wednesday night's City Council meeting.

Meanwhile, Capt. Scott Casterline told WFMZ Wednesday that the officer who shot and wounded a man late Tuesday night has been placed on administrative leave.

That officer -- whom officials have not identified -- was investigating two reports of gunfire on the South Side when he encountered a man at Centre and Wirebach streets. At some point during the encounter, the officer shot the man, police said.

Witnesses, and the man's family, have identified that man as Nelson A. Mayers, 25, of New Jersey. His sister Gena told the TV station the police had no reason to shoot her brother.

"Even if he was running, they could have pursued him," she said.

It wasn't clear whether Mayers was connected to the investigation, but District Attorney John Morganelli told the Morning Call "it wasn't just some innocent bystander."

He said his office will review Easton police's findings once the investigation is complete.
