Police: Man Tried to Smother Girlfriend

Dirk Helbig, 44, charged with assault in Easton after allegedly trying to smother girlfriend with a pillow.

A woman living at Easton’s Hotel Lafayette told police her boyfriend tried to smother her with a pillow and that “she had to fight for her life to get the pillow off her face.”

She said the man’s actions forced her to run to the hotel lobby – “completely naked,” court records say.

Police charged the boyfriend, Dirk Anthony Helbig, 44, in connection with the incident early Monday.

Police arriving at the 11 N. Fourth St. hotel around 2:20am encountered the woman, who said Helbig assaulted her in their hotel room.

She said Helbig accused her of cheating, the records say. She said he punched her on her left hip, bit her left hand and placed a pillow over her face in an attempt to smother her.

Police said there was redness and swelling above and on the side of the woman’s right eye, including hemorrhaging to the white part of her eye. She also had a small laceration to her left earlobe.

Helbig was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment by physical contact. He was arraigned later Monday morning by on-duty District Judge Todd Strohe of Bangor and committed to Northampton County Prison after failing to post $25,000 bail.
