Police: Easton Woman Helped With Drug Case, Kept Drugs

Easton police say Janet Smith, a prostitute, held onto heroin in controlled buy.

say they gave a woman $60 to buy heroin from a drug dealer earlier this month.

The problem: she apparently used the heroin herself.

According to the Express-Times, Janet Smith, whom police charactize as a "known prostitute," was working with investigators in a drug sting on Feb. 11.

Smith, 54, of Fourth Street, was supposed to use $60 from the police to buy heroin from a dealer, and then return with the drugs to a pre-determined location.

Instead, police said Smith went to her room at the Hotel Lafayette, where officers found her with a needle in her arm, and unable to tell them where the heroin had gone.

Smith is charged with theft by deception and tampering with evidence, as well as prostitution, as she apparently propositioned an undercover cop earlier in the same day. She was in in lieu of $5,000 bail.
