Man in Police Shooting Faces Heroin Charges

Nelson A. Mayers, reportedly shot by Easton police, is accused of possession of heroin.

A man who was reportedly had heroin with him at the time of the shooting.

Nelson A. Mayers, 25, was charged Wednesday with possession of a controlled substance.

Police have not yet identified the man shot by an officer during an investigation on the South Side Tuesday, but family members and witnesses at the scene have said it was Mayers.

Officers were in the neighborhood responding to a report of gunshots. At some point one officer -- who has not been identified and has been placed on paid leave -- shot a man he encountered on the 600 block of Wirebach Street.

Court papers filed with offer no direct connection to the shooting.

However, the affadavit of probale cause says an officer encountered Mayers -- listed in court records as living on the 600 block of Berwick Street -- in the same area where the shooting happened, and gives the time of the incident at the same time of the shooting.

"A later search of Mayers discovered him to be in possession of a package containing a substance that field tested positive for heroin," the affadavit says.

Mayers will be charged via summons. He is scheduled before to appear before Corpora on Sept. 26 for a preliminary hearing.

According to the Express-Times, the man who was shot is still hospitalized. Police expect the investigation in the case to last into next week.
