Fire, Smoke Killed Driver in I-78 Wreck

Hackettstown man's death ruled accidental in Interstate 78 crash.

A New Jersey man killed in a crash Monday morning died from burns and smoke inhalation, Northampton County's coroner says.

Zacharly Lysek tells the Express-Times that Daniel C. Murphy's death has been ruled accidental.

Murphy, 65, of Hackettstown, died after a tractor trailer collided with his car, which was stopped at the toll booth on the westbound side of the highway in Williams Township.

According to police, both vehicles caught fire after the crash. The truck driver managed to get out of his cab, but Murphy was trapped inside his Ford Taurus, police said, and died at the scene.
