Easton Police Name Officer in Shooting

Patrolman Eric Campbell is the officer who shot a man on the South Side this week.

Easton police have identified the officer involved in a shooting earlier this week on the South Side.

Police say it was Patrolman Eric Campbell, a six-year veteran of the force, who shot a man during , according to a news release.

The release also officially identified Nelson A. Mayers, 25, as the man shot and wounded by Campbell, who works the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift.

This was the first time police have named Campbell or Mayers, although Mayers family members and witnesses had identified Mayers the night of the shooting.

Mayers, 25, of the 600 block of Berwick Street, was charged Wednesday with following a search the night of the shooting.

According to police, the incident began at 9:38 p.m. with a call that shots had been fired in the 100 block of W. St. Joseph Street. About 20 minutes later, another shots-fired call came in at the 400 block of Williams Street.

At 10:14 p.m., Campbell came across Mayers near the intersection of Centre and Wirebach streets. 

Soon after that, he fired on him. Mayers was taken to a local hosptial.

Campbell is on administrative leave, the release says. Police are still asking for anyone with information to call Lt. Matthew Gerould at 610-250-6634.
