Carjacking 'Victim' Actually Gun Thief, Police Say

William Hightower told Easton police he'd been carjacked. When police found his car, it allegedly contained a stolen gun.

An Easton man who claimed he had been carjacked is now facing criminal charges of his own after his car turned up with a gun he had apparently stolen.

According to city police, William Hightower, 33, had initially reported being carjacked by three men on the South Side.

His carjackers were all black, wearing dark clothing and beards, and one of them carrying a gun.

Eventually, police found Hightower's car, and impounded it. Inside was a loaded handgun. Police say Hightower—a convicted felon—admitted that he owned the gun. The gun had been reported stolen in a burglary in Easton.

Hightower is charged with receiving stolen property and with illegal ownership of a firearm.

He was arraigned Friday afternoon and sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
