William J. 'Chief' Slifer, 86, Former Wilson Police Chief
William J. Slifer died Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital's Warren Campus.
William J. “Chief” Slifer, 86, of Wilson Borough, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014 in St. Luke’s Hospital-Warren Campus.
Born December 1, 1927, in Quakertown, PA, he was a son of the late Wilmer Slifer and Margaret Osenbaugh Brahler.
His wife of 64 years, the former Lillian H. Richter, died February 13, 2012.
He retired in 1982 as chief of the Wilson Borough Police Department, where he was employed for over 29 years. After retirement, “Chief” worked for WalMart, Northampton Crossings, for 15 years.
William served with the Navy during WWII and as a radarman during the Korea War, aboard the USS Stormes.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and reading.
“Chief” was a member of Easton Lodge 152, F & AM; Rajah Temple
and Wilson Democratic Association. He was a life member of Fraternal Order of Police, Order of Fleas and Citizens Hose Company.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda A. Readinger and her husband Richard, of Easton; a son, William Slifer, of Ft. Belvoir, VA; a brother, Stanley Slifer and his wife Patricia, of Tulsa, OK; two grandsons, Kyle Readinger and his fiancée Katie Fitzpatrick and Kevin Slifer; two great-grandsons, Kevin Slifer, Jr. and Jeffrey Fitzpatrick and two nephews, Stanley and Harry Slifer.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Strunk Funeral Home, Inc., 2101 Northampton Street, Wilson Borough. Call Wednesday 9:30-11am in the funeral home. Burial will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine. Offer on-line condolences at www.strunkfh.com.
