Easton Marks Start of Historic Hanukkah

Hanukkah and Thanksgiving come together for the first time in over a century. It's something that may not happen again for a thousand years.

When Rabbi Yaacov Halperin lit the menorah in Centre Square Wednesday night, it was significant for two reasons.

First, because it marked a decade of Chabad of the Lehigh Valley's Hanukkah observances in Easton.

But it's also the rare moment where the start of Hanukkah coincided with Thanksgiving, something that hasn't happened in over 100. Halperin said it won't happen again for a long time, as long as 75,000 years, depending on whose calculations you read.

It makes the both holidays more significant, the rabbi told a small group of people gathered to light the candle, a chance to give thanks "to the one above."

Mayor Sal Panto said the menorah's years in Centre Square show the diversity of the city.

"We are really fortunate. We're like the United Nations, we all get along here in the city," he said.
