Easton Dad Needs New Kidney

Darren Schuster is eligible for a kidney transplant, but his insurance won't cover treatments before his surgery.

Life threw Donna Schuster and her husband Darren a curve three years ago when he was diagnosed with kidney failure.

The Easton father of four has been undergoing regular dialysis treatments, but recently learned that his wife is eligible to donate a kidney, according to GoFundMe, an on-line fundraising website.

"With great news, there's always bad news," Donna Schuster wrote on her page. "Since science is quicker than insurance companies, we found out that Medicare will NOT pay for the treatments Darren needs before transplant."

The treatments are called plasmapheresis, and Darren Schuster needs four of them, at a cost of $5,000 each.

So far, they've raised $1,838 (as of Thursday at 3 p.m.). Their goal is $25,000: $20,000 for the treatments, another $5,000 for expenses and trips back and forth to the hospital following the treatment.

You can donate at the Schusters' GoFundMe page and find other Easton area fundraising projects.
