Winter Storm Nemo: How Much Snow Will We Get?

A winter storm will hit the Northeast and New England today into Saturday and Easton could get 3 to 5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

That forecast is a downgraded version of what was released this morning, when the city was predicted to get nearly a foot of snow.

On Friday afternoon -- when the forecast seemed more dire -- the city of Easton declared a snow emergency effective at 8 p.m. Friday until 1 p.m. Saturday. 

Residents who live along the city's snow emergency routes can park in the Pine Street garage for free during those hours.

The worst of the storm will hit tonight with heavy blowing snow expected, mainly before 4 a.m., could be heavy at times with 3 to 5 inches expected.

The National Weather Service says:

"As much as one to two feet of snow is forecast from the New York City metro area to Maine, with localized heavier amounts possible. This, in addition to wind gusts as high as 60-75 mph will create significant impacts to transportation and power. Coastal flooding is also possible from Boston northward."

WFMZ is also forecasting six or more inches of snow for Northampton County. A foot or more of snow will probably fall in the Poconos to the delight of ski resorts and skiers.

The entire Lehigh Valley is under a winter storm warning.

Wilson Area schools planned to let students out starting at noon today, with St. Jane Frances de Chantal students heading home at 11 a.m. Easton Area students already ha the day off due to a teacher in-service day.

Easton Area High School's planned "mini-THON" -- modeled after the massive Penn State dance marathon has been pushed back until Saturday evening at 8 p.m. until Sunday at 8 a.m. 

Friday's ski-club meeting at the high school has been cancelled as well, while the basketball games scheduled for Friday afternoon have been postponed. 

The State Theatre postponed one of its Friday night shows until April, while Lafayette Collegecancelled its Sound Prints jazz show. 

The Easton Farmers' Market will suspend its indoor market Saturday, and expects to be back in business at the Nurture Nature Center Saturday, Feb. 16.

It won't be a good time to be on the road.

"Heavy snowfall is likely to affect the Friday PM commute in the Poconos, Lehigh Valley and northern & central NJ," the NWS said in a weather briefing.
