Westboro Baptist Church Petition Gets 250,000 Signatures

A petition created Dec. 16 already has more than 250,000 supporters.

A petition to "Revoke the tax exempt status of the Westboro Baptist Church and re-classify Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group" has become the most popular petition ever on the White House, We the People, website, according to a Huffiington Post report.

The petition has gained 250,000 supporters since Westboro Baptist Church tweeted that it would picket funerals of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut; a group of hackers responded by posting contact information - email, address and phone numbers - of members of the church.

Westboro Baptist Church is an extremist organization whose members are known for picketing soldiers' funerals in protest of gay marraige - which they believe is the cause of everything evil.

The petition reads:

Westboro Baptist Church is legally recognized as a religious organization and therefore receives a tax exempt status under our laws. The Phelps family and their supporters use these tax exempt funds to finance a country-wide campaign against any person or group they feel promotes values that do not meet with their own. Most prominently they are anti-gay.

The members of this hate group make a practice of targeting funerals to make their case, routinely inflicting further pain and anguish onto the mourning families of deceased soldiers and, even worse, the victims of tragic crimes. They hold signs thanking God and celebrating the deaths of these people. They wave these signs in the faces of the families.

By granting their tax exemption WE ARE FUNDING THEIR HATE. This must change.

Hi, My name is Melinda Schroeder. I am a former resident of Topeka, Ks and a former member of the WBC. I left the church in 1996 after being sexually assaulted by one of the male members. I have remained in contact with a few of the members and have learned that some members of the church have created a suicide pact and plan to drink cyanide poison if ever cornered similar to what happened in Jonestown. Some of the members also have military style assault weapons and have trained extensively in their use, they have stockpiled tons of food and other supplies. Please help me save the children that are still in the congregation before their minds are filled with hate also.

I am a veteran school administrator in the New Jersey public schools and I have three young childrenRead More in the district. I am frightened and worried about our schools. What would it take for the PADOE to take over the district? Electing new board members is not enough. We need help from the state as soon as possible. The district needs to be stabilized and then everything from soup to nuts must be assessed by an outside educational entity. Our children deserve much better!

I hear the NFSA does a good job helping school districts and from the list of PA schools a number ofRead More local schools, like Parkland and some in Bucks County participate. Maybe this is something Easton needs to do. http://www.schoolfoundations.org/en/about_nsfa/
