Easton Schools Could Cut 43 Jobs

The Easton Area School Board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a measure that could cut 43 school district employees, including 16 teachers.

If the measure passes, it will be the second year in a row the district has laid off employees in order to balance its budget.

Last month, the school board voted 6-3 for a $134 million budget that was balanced by a 1.7 percent tax increase, $750,000 from the district fund balance, and job cuts.

According to the resolution, the district would cut the following positions:

  • One high school French teacher
  • One high school Spanish teacher
  • One high school special education teacher
  • One high school technology education teacher
  • One high school family and consumer science teacher
  • One high school English as a second language teacher
  • One middle school Read 180 teacher, for grades 7 and 8
  • One middle school special education teacher, for grades 5 and 6
  • One elementary school librarian
  • Seven elementary school classroom teachers
Also facing elimination: 11 assistant coaches, seven custodians, a maintenance worker, two paraprofessionals, one part time and one full time, one administrative professional, two technology integration specialists, a school nurse, an athletic trainer and a home and school visitor.

The board is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district offices.
