"Groundhog Day" Budget Facing Easton Schools

For the past few years, budget season in the Easton Area School District has meant the threat of cuts to staff and programs. And that's the case again this year, where the district could trim 18 positions either through attrition or staff cuts. “It’s March on the calendar, but I’d say the theme of this is Groundhog Day," board member Robert Moskaitis said at Tuesday night's board meeting.

New Pope Elected: Easton Catholics React

Catholics around the globe watched Wednesday as Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the new pope. Among them was the Rev. Deogratias Rwegasira of Our Lady of Mercy parish, who watched on his cellphone as Pope Francis I made his first public appearance. "It is God's word, so we are very happy. He has given us a leader," said a beaming Rwegasira.

Easton police say four suspected gang members were arrested Friday morning in a drug raid that focused on heroin dealing in the West Ward. Police raided 218 N. 8th Street before the sun came up Friday, and took four men into custody.

Masked Robber Pistol Whips Woman

The robbers came in before dawn, wearing masks. They pistol-whipped one clerk, got the other to open the register, and then tied up both women. That's the account Wilson police give for what happened early Monday at the Square One Exxon on Northampton Street. According to police, two women were working at the station around 3:30 a.m. when it was robbed by a pair of men, both wearing masks.
