Glendon Auction House Looks to Expand

Island Park Road Auction House hopes to turn old Air Products offices into a flea market space.

When Air Products moved out of its office space on Island Park Road in Glendon, it left behind quite a bit of stuff.

There's no electricity, and a flashlight-lit tour reveals desks, cubicles, file cabinets and a whiteboard on the wall. There's a message on the board in fading purple ink: "WHERE ARE ALL THE JOBS!"

It's not exactly a cheery space, but Frank Fodero -- the man giving the tour -- sees only possibilities.

Fodero runs Island Park Road Auction House in another part of the building at 400 Island Park Road. After nearly a year in this space, he's planning an expansion for the flea market side of his business. The former Air Products offices are part of that plan.

"This could be really nice," Fodero said, envisioning people selling their wares in the former office space, maybe a food vendor in the little break room.

Fodero already runs an outdoor flea market on the property -- the next one is scheduled for today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- and also runs a monthly auction on the property. "You have it, we will sell it," his slogan reads.

On Wednesday morning, Fodero was showing off some of the things for sale: power tools, furniture, electronics, vintage beer cans -- including a six-pack of Billy Beer.

He'd like to sell some of these items for more -- the furniture, for example -- but feels he's up against a bad economy.

"It's a buyer's market," Fodero said. "You don't have to be a college professor to know that."

He's hoping that changes as more people learn about the auction house.

Auctions at Island Park are held on the last Saturday of the month, with a preview day on the last Friday of the month from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fodero's next sale is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. Visit their website for more information.
