5 Things to Know Today: April 26, 2012

Forget the possibility of rain. It's spring, and there are lots of reasons to get out and do something different today. Here are five good ones:

• Five Guys Burgers and Fries will give 100 percent of their proceeds to “Support Mark Werkheiser's Children” at all three of their Lehigh Valley locations today, as well as their Stroudsburg and Dickson City locations. Make sure you tell them to “Put it on Mark's Tab” when placing your order to ensure your order is included in the donation. Orders will also be taken on-line at www.fiveguys.com
  The Easton location is at Routes 248 and 33, in Lower Nazareth, in the Target/Wegmans shopping center. Place your order by phone at this location by calling 610-253-4271.
  The donated funds will go towards the construction of additional bedrooms at the home of Mark Werkheiser's sister, who was granted custody of the four Werkheiser children after their mother, on March 15.

• Today is the last day to register for the annual Forks of the Delaware Shad Fishing Tournament & Festival, which begins this weekend and runs through May 4. A registration form is attached as a pdf; register at Easton City Hall, Recreation Department, 1 S. 3rd St., Easton. You can also register from noon to 6 p.m. at Scott Park. No one can register past this time. The cost is $35.
  
  
• It's National Pretzel Day, and the in the Giant shopping center on South 25th Street in Palmer is giving away one free pretzel to each customer. The first 100 people in line will get a punch card valid for free pretzel every day in May. No purchase is necessary to claim your free pretzel.
  
  
• The non-fiction book group meets this evening at 7 p.m. to discuss The Discovery of Jeanne Baret: a Story of Science, the High Seas, and the First Woman to Circumnavigate the World by Glynis Ridley.
  In 1765 botanist Philibert Commerson set out as part of the first French circumnavigation of the globe. As the ship’s naturalist, he was looking for new medicines, spices, foods, etc. Joining him as his assistant was his mistress, the 26 year-old Jeanne Baret, an expert on herbs, who had to disguise herself as a teenage boy but was eventually outed by the crew.

• Tonight is a good night to get out and see some live music in the city. The Subtle Experience with Yan Carlos will provide cool Latin jazz at from 8 to 11 p.m. and American Myth will play beginning at 10 p.m. There is no cover for either show.
