Marvin Hamlisch Was Due to Play in Easton

Marvin Hamlisch, the award-winning Broadway/Hollywood composer who died Tuesday, had been due to play at next year.

"The State Theatre is deeply sorry to hear of the passing of legendary composer Marvin Hamlisch," the theater said in an e-mail Tuesday. "He was scheduled to appear with Donna McKechnie at the State Theatre on March 23, 2013. 
Ticket buyers will be notified of options."

Hamlisch, 68, died in Los Angeles after a short illness. According to the Associated Press, his awards included "three Academy Awards, four Emmys, four Grammys, a Tony and three Golden Globes."

The Tony award was for A Chorus Line, which also recieved the Pulitzer Prize. His movie work included The Sting, Ordinary People and Three Men and a Baby.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the State has lost one of the performers on its lineup to an untimely death. 

Comedian Richard Jeni and pioneering rock DJ "Wolfman" Jack had both been slated to appear at the theater at the time of their deaths (in 2007 and 1995, respectively).

And singers Dan Fogelberg and Mary Travers (of Peter Paul and Mary) were both forced to cancel shows at the State due to illness before passing soon after, said Jamie Balliet, the theater's senior vice president for marketing.
