Travel Alert: Three Day Route 611 Detour Starts Tuesday

Bridge Commission needs time to remove bridge beams along portion of Route 22.

A three day detour along Route 611 near the Route 22 toll bridge in Easton will begin Tuesday morning, according to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission.

The detour will involve the section of Route 611 that crosses under Route 22 immediately west of the toll bridge, and goes into effect Tuesday at 7 a.m.

While the road is closed, the DRJTBC will set up cranes, remove bridge beams, and demolish deteriorated bridge abutments. The commission hopes to have the road reopened by 3 p.m. Thursday.

The commission will post detour signs around Route 22 via Third Street in Easton. The detour is subject to change to due to weather, traffic and emergencies. Another closure is planned for late September or early October. 

The detour is part a $30 million project to rehabilitate the bridge between Easton and Phillipsburg, as well as some of the surrounding exits and overpasses.

The work is expected to take until early 2015, and will involve Route 22 being reduced to one lane during part of that time -- six months this year and another nine months in 2014.
