Traffic Alert: Pothole Repair Could Mean Route 22 Delays

Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission tells drivers to expect pre-dawn delays Wednesday.

Attention early morning Route 22 commuters: your drive across the bridge into New Jersey might take a little longer Wednesday morning.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission says it will be fixing potholes on the New Jersey side of the bridge, which is expected to cause traffic to stop in both directions.

The work is scheduled between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., the commission said on its website.

"Traffic stoppages are expected to occur in both the eastbound and westbound directions," the DRJTBC said. "Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time or use an alternate route during this period."

The commission began closing lanes last month as part of a $30 million project to rehabilitate the bridge between Easton and Phillipsburg, as well as some of the surrounding exits and overpasses.

In mid-July, it diverted all traffic into two single lanes, closing the eastbound part of the highway from just before Fourth Street in Easton to the toll bridge in Phillipsburg. That pattern is expected to be in place until December.

The overall project is expected to take until early 2015, and will involve Route 22 being reduced to one lane during part of that time -- six months this year and another nine months in 2014.

To avoid traffic, the DRJTBC has asked drivers to use Interstate 78
