Traffic Alert: Expect Weekend Delays on Route 22 Bridge

Bridge commission said it needs time to install new connection cables on Route 22 bridge.

Drivers on the Route 22 bridge between Pennsylvania and New Jersey this weekend could find themselves stuck in traffic, depending on the time of day.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission is warning eastbound and westbound motorists that they could see 15-minute delays between 9 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday, and again from 9 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday.

The commission said in a news release it will use that time to install new overhead cables on the bridge and other connection devices. Traffic will be halted to keep cars from getting hit with falling objects.

The repairs are part of the DRJTBC's $30 million project to rehabilitate the bridge between Easton and Phillipsburg, as well as some of the surrounding exits and overpasses.

In mid-July, it diverted all traffic into two single lanes, closing the eastbound part of the highway from just before Fourth Street in Easton to the toll bridge in Phillipsburg. That pattern is expected to be in place until late December.

The overall project is expected to take until early 2015, and will involve Route 22 being reduced to one lane during part of that time -- six months this year and another nine months in 2014.
